It’s important to understand the regulations when going through the naturalization process. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is in charge of the procedures that allow immigrants to obtain their new status. Here’s a helpful guide that details what you should know about the government’s procedures for pursuing American citizenship.

What to Know About the Naturalization Process

How can I qualify to become a U.S. citizen?

You must show you’ve lived in the USA continuously for at least five years before applying for citizenship. After the time passes, submit Form N-400 and prepare for your USCIS interview.

Can I get a copy of the naturalization civics test questions?

naturalizationThe USCIS publishes its entire list of 100 naturalization test questions, and you can review it online or download it for review. During your interview, a USCIS officer will ask you ten questions from this list, and you must answer six or more correctly. The list is available in English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

What happens if I don’t pass the English and civics tests during my interview?

You get two opportunities to pass the English and civics tests. If you fail either test during your first interview, the USCIS schedules a second interview for the part you did not pass. Your second interview takes place between 60 and 90 days after your first interview.

What if my Green Card will expire before I go for my interview?

Renew your expiring Green Card even if you applied for citizenship. You need valid, unexpired proof of lawful permanent residence at all times during the process. If you have questions, make an InfoPass appointment or talk to an immigration law attorney.
