Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a method of local sedation offered by many dentists. By breathing in a few deep mouthfuls of this colorless and odorless gas, patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. Below, you will find an introduction to laughing gas, how it works, its potential side effects, and who can most benefit from it during a trip to the dentist.

How Does It Work?

The feelings of relaxation stem from a displacement of air in the lungs. This reduces how much oxygen reaches the brain and the bloodstream. While you receive more than sufficient amounts of oxygen to stay conscious and healthy, it is the slight oxygen deprivation that leads to the mild wooziness, giddiness, and sense of calm that comes with laughing gas.

What Are the Potential Side Effects?

Laughing gas is considered safe and effective and is the least risky sedation method available. Its benefits take virtually no time to set in, and they typically wear off within two minutes. If a patient does develop side effects, they are usually the result of an excessive nitrous oxide dose or from breathing in the gas too quickly. If there are side effects, they tend to be mild and might include headache, nausea, sweats, chills, or fatigue.

Who Is the Right Patient?

dentist Most patients, including children, can utilize laughing gas without worry or concern. It is especially helpful for people who have anxieties about going to the dentist. It allows the patient to be alert and conscious without being burdened with overwhelming fears.

With that said, there are some who should avoid laughing gas. People with respiratory illness or psychiatric issues like schizophrenia should not be exposed to nitrous oxide. Since the gas is administered through a facial mask, those with disabilities or anxieties around wearing a mask over their face may want to explore alternate forms of sedation with their dentist.
