Storage units are remarkably versatile spaces, providing the ideal home for little- or infrequently-used items. With that said, certain possessions should never be put in storage—things that can jeopardize the safety, cleanliness, and effectiveness of the whole facility. Below, four of these items are discussed in more detail.

What You Shouldn’t Put Into Storage

1. Food

Storage units are not the right environment to keep any kind of food—even pet food. Even climate-controlled storage is not designed to keep perishable items. Food only invites pests, and you don't want your storage space suddenly overrun with mice or infested with ants. For the welfare and hygiene of the entire storage facility, get rid of all foodstuffs prior to loading up your unit, including cleaning crumbs out of any containers.

2. Toxic Chemicals

storage unitToxic chemicals have specific storage requirements. If those requirements are not followed to the letter, many chemicals can produce reactions, which might range from noxious fumes to explosions. Also, chemicals can leak and damage your property and the property of those with storage units near yours. Properly dispose of fertilizers, paint, gasoline, household cleaners, and other chemicals instead of storing them; contact your local sanitation department for disposal guidelines and procedures.

3. Weapons & Fireworks

Both weapons and fireworks can accidentally go off even when they're not in use. This can be catastrophic to other items kept in a storage facility. To get rid of fireworks, soak them in a bucket of water overnight, wrap them in plastic wrap, and throw them in the garbage. Weapons should be under your control at all times, with proper safety mechanisms in place.

4. Items You Can Sell or Donate

Getting a storage unit is a perfect opportunity to declutter. Go through your belongings and eliminate those you no longer want or need. This will ensure you take advantage of every square inch of your storage space. Most kinds of household goods, from furniture and appliances to clothing and toys, can be sold online or donated to local charities.
