Everyone loves hearing their dentist say “no cavities!” at the end of their appointment. For kids, though, that declaration might not hold the same meaning, especially when they have no idea what cavities actually are. Some kids might even find cavities scary and something to be worried about. Talking to your kids about cavities—and oral hygiene overall—can eliminate some of that fear and help them be more excited about taking care of their teeth.

3 Tips for Talking to Kids About Cavities

1. Keep It Simple

Kids can get scared and upset when they don't understand things, and using complicated terms or overly specific explanations can only worsen that confusion. Tell your kids about cavities in simple terms, such as “they are small holes in your teeth that are caused by germs.” Explain that brushing their teeth, flossing, and going to the dentist will help keep the germs away, so they don’t get cavities.

2. Provide Reassurance

dentistEven if you explain how they can prevent cavities by taking care of their teeth, kids might be scared. Be prepared to answer their questions honestly. For instance, kids might want to know if cavities hurt or how the dentist can fix them. Reassuring them that yes, cavities might hurt some, but that the dentist can fix it with a filling, can go a long way toward relieving anxiety. If you have had fillings, this is a good time to share your positive experience and show what fillings look like.

3. Don’t Rely on Fear

Learning about cavities spurs many children to become more diligent about their oral hygiene, but don’t use fear to motivate them. Telling your children that they will get cavities or all of their teeth will fall out forever if they don't brush will only scare them and make them more reluctant to tell you if there is a problem. Be encouraging, and focus on the positive aspects of brushing and flossing. Remind them that being proactive will keep cavities from forming, and they will get a good report from the dentist if they keep up with their dental care.
