Eye irritation can be a real bother, especially when you’re unsure of the underlying cause. Along with visiting an eye care specialist to get to the bottom of the issue, it also helps to understand why irritation commonly happens and what you can to mitigate any bothersome effects.

Why Are Your Eyes Irritated?

1. Digital Strain

If you work at a computer for long periods, you’ve probably experienced digital eye strain. Redness, irritation, and a feeling a foreign object in your eyes are all common when you spend too much time staring at a screen. The 20-20-20 rule can be helpful in this case; every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to stare at an object 20 feet away.

2. Allergies

eye careIndoor and outdoor allergies can also affect your eyes. You may experience watering, itchiness, and redness if eye allergies are an issue. Talk with your eye care specialist about treatment, such as medicated eye drops, to soothe allergy symptoms.

3. Blepharitis

Blepharitis causes the eyelid to become inflamed and irritated. It can result from a bacterial infection, but it’s also linked to skin conditions like rosacea. A warm compress is good for relieving discomfort caused blepharitis. If the issue is caused by a bacterial infection, you may be given antibiotics.

4. Dry Eye

Tears are essential for lubricating the eyes. When tear production is insufficient, dry eye can occur. This is usually identified by a stinging sensation and even blurred vision. If the condition is mild, eye care specialists often recommend lubricating drops and artificial tears. There are also procedures that are performed on the tear duct to prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.
