Do's and Don'ts of Wine Tasting August 16, 2019

Do's and Don'ts of Wine Tasting, Koolaupoko, Hawaii

Attending a wine tasting is a fun way to explore a variety of carefully curated wines; however, many people visit wineries unprepared, which can hamper the experience. Here are a few do’s and don’ts for attending a wine tasting to make your experience more meaningful.

Take your time.

Because the samples offered during wine tasting are typically small, you may find yourself tempted to slurp it down quickly to get ready for the next pour. However, doing so could disrupt your ability to enjoy the wine fully. To appreciate its complexities, tip your glass at a 45-degree angle to evaluate the body in neutral lighting — swirl the wine, smell it, slowly sip a little, and think about what you’re tasting.

When you look at the wine, pay attention to the color and viscosity of the liquid. When you smell it, think about your first impressions, the secondary aromas, and the lingering scent. Pay attention to the sweetness, sourness, and feel on your tongue when you taste it. By taking your time to appreciate the wine, you will get more out of the testing experience.

Take notes.

wine tastingAs you evaluate different wines, don’t be afraid to ask questions about the region it came from, how it was produced, and what the main flavor profiles people tend to experience are. Take notes regarding brands, years, and your personal opinion of the taste. Afterward, you will have a treasure trove of notes that could help you to pick out your next bottle of cabernet sauvignon or pinot grigio.

Swallow the wine.

While you aren’t typically given enough wine to become inebriated, it can help your note-taking abilities to stay sober for the tasting. Try not to swallow the wine; instead, deposit it into the spittoon when you’re finished swirling it around your mouth.

Wear fragrance.

Because many wines have a delicate flavor profile, avoid wearing perfumes or colognes to the wine-tasting event. Since some laundry detergents can also have strong smells, sniff your clothing beforehand to choose an outfit that won’t affect the experience for any of your fellow tasters.
