Your septic tank has a crucial job: It stores and treats waste matter from your home's plumbing and helps ensure the safety, sanitation, and hygiene of your entire property. But your septic system will require some routine maintenance to work its best and serve your home and family for years to come.

Do:

Save maintenance records.

Maintenance records, including inspection reports, provide important information about your septic system beyond simply detailing when your system was last inspected or repaired. This paperwork can show your sludge levels, your tank's water-tightness, the distribution of wastewater in your drain lines, the existence of possible damage, and the location of past leaks. Your records might also tell you where you are likely to have leaks in the future. Having this information will help you or a septic professional understand the state of your tank and what work needs to be done.

Plant grass.

septic systemPlanting grass over a septic tank and drain field prevents erosion of the soil, increases oxygen exchange, and removes moisture from the ground. It can also provide a pseudo reading of the tank's efficiency: Unusually lush grass over a septic tank might signal an improperly functioning hydraulic system. But while greenery is good to have above your septic system, be sure to plant trees at least 100 feet from the system so the roots don't interfere with tank functioning.

Don't:

Flush items that shouldn’t be flushed.

Only toilet paper and waste should be disposed of when flushing the toilet. Always be mindful of what you’re flushing, as anything else can cause a septic breakdown. This includes feminine hygiene products, paper towels, kitty litter, cigarette butts, and even disposable wipes labeled "flushable."

Miss signs of septic issues.

Stay on top of potential issues before they start by knowing the signs of common septic problems. Look out for water and sewage backups, standing water around your drain field, foul odors around your tank, and gurgling or bubbling sounds coming from your home's plumbing. These signs all indicate that you likely need maintenance or repairs.

Even after following all of these tips, your septic system should be inspected every one to three years. RJ Roncaglione Excavating has been providing septic services to the Crawford County, PA, region since 1982. They also offer excavation services, snow removal, sand and gravel delivery, and grading.
