Whether you’re moving to a new home, running out of space in your current home, or just need to temporarily secure some items while away on military duty, a self-storage unit may be the perfect spot. Storage facilities can accommodate almost any amount of excess items, including cars, boats, and RVs. Here are some do’s and don’ts when looking for a storage space.

Do:

Know the right-sized unit to rent.

No matter what anyone tells you, only you can know the right-sized space. If you have several larger items, then you will require more room, unless you’re willing to stack other items on top of it. Wooden, glass, and other fragile items may require their own unit to maintain space and keep them protected. Also consider, if you must visit the unit often and remove items, then you‘ll want a walkway for access. If there are specific items you may need, then pack them last so you can reach them easily.

Pack and store items properly.

Disassemble larger items, such as furniture, and wrap them in cloth to protect them from getting damaged. Do not over stack items, and make sure heavier items like books are on the bottom of stacks. remove lights bulbs from lamps, and rugs should be rolled and placed upright in the corner of the unit.

Don’t:

Forget to protect your items.

Self-StorageNot only do you want to make sure everything is packed tightly and secured, but find out if your renters or homeowners insurance will cover the loss of those items in storage. Do not pass out spare keys. If someone else is going to access your unit, then give them the key for a one time use, and get the key back when they are finished.

Place hazardous or perishable items in storage.

Toxic, flammable, and combustible items are not allowed in storage units. If you are going to place a gas-powered device, such as a lawnmower, in storage, then empty the gasoline first. It can expand and create fumes which can spread to other units. Don’t place food or plants in storage. Food will go bad and attract rodents. Plants need light and will not receive water while in storage.
