Emergencies can happen at any time on the road. Whether you ran over a pothole or have an air leak, knowing how to change a tire is an essential skill that can help in these situations. If you’re not sure where to begin, below is a step-by-step guide to follow.

Changing a Tire 101

1. Find a Safe Spot to Pull Over

Don’t panic at the first sign of a flat. Stay calm and look for a safe location, such as a parking lot or shoulder of the road where you can pull over. Avoid narrow shoulders as they can put you in the way of oncoming traffic. Turn your hazard lights on to ensure you’re visible to other motorists.

2. Remove the Cap

Your spare and jack should be located in the trunk of the vehicle underneath the floor. Before using the jack, remove the lug nuts from the hub cap with the lug wrench and then take the hub cap off. Loosen but don’t remove the lug nuts on the wheel.

3. Lift the Wheel & Replace the Tire

tireThe owner’s manual should provide instructions on where to place the jack beneath the vehicle. Turn the jack clockwise until the tire is lifted a few inches off the ground and you can easily remove it. Remove the remaining lug nuts and flat, and place it in the trunk. Install the spare by lining it up with the bolts and securing the lug nuts with the wrench by turning clockwise.

5. Lower the Vehicle

Once the tire is secure, you can lower the vehicle by turning the handle on the jack counter-clockwise. Don’t drive for an extended period of time with the spare; it’s only meant to act as a placeholder until you can safely get to an auto shop for a replacement.
