Whether you’re in your garage or your commercial workshop, cracks in an otherwise smooth concrete floor stand out immediately. Luckily, you can repair them on your own with a bit of ready-mix concrete. Use the following guide to have your flooring looking seamless in no time.

How Can I Repair Different Concrete Cracks?

If the cracks are wide, you’ll need to start by making them bigger. By undercutting the sides of the rift with a hammer and masonry chisel, create an upside-down V shape, so the compound is more stable inside the opening once it dries. Once you’ve widened the bottom of the crack, remove extra debris with a wire brush or pressure washer.

Next, combine the ready-mix concrete with water according to the instructions on the packaging, and use a trowel to push it inside the opening. After filling it up and feathering the edges, use a dry paintbrush to smooth out your handiwork. From there, allow the concrete to dry and apply your desired finish.

If the crack is on the narrow side, you can use an elastomeric filler made for masonry cracks, as well as a caulking gun, to slip the material into the crack. If the rift is nothing but a hairline, use a vinyl concrete patching product instead and a putty knife, as this is less likely to peel off.

How Can I Preserve the Patchwork?

To protect your repairs, apply a sealant to the entire floor once the compound has had enough time to cure. In addition to keeping the patchwork in place, this product will also safeguard the concrete from discoloration due to spills and other accidents. For this, use a water-based polyurethane sealant for the best results, and apply a second coat a couple of hours after the initial one.
