When your dashboard’s battery light flashes on, you may wonder whether it’s the result of a glitch or an indicator of a serious problem. While many factors can cause this light to flash on, you should follow several key steps whenever you see this warning light. Whether it’s a minor glitch or an issue that may require roadside assistance, knowing the following measures will help you stay calm the next time this light turns on.

How to Deal With a Lit Battery Light

Conserve Power

If your battery light illuminates while you’re driving, your battery still has enough power to keep your vehicle going, but you should still save as much energy as possible. Turn off the air conditioner, radio, and unplug any charging devices to save power and prevent stalling.

Pull Over

Once you see your check engine light, take a look at your vehicle’s heat gauge. If the temperature is on the rise, pull your car over to prevent damage from overheating.

Look Under the Hood

In addition, inspect the battery cables and serpentine belt for signs of cracking or fraying. If you notice any of these issues, call for roadside assistance, since your vehicle may not be safe to drive.

Call Roadside Assistance

Err on the side of caution by calling roadside assistance to help with your battery. They’ll test its life and replace it if necessary. In the event that your vehicle has more serious problems, they’ll tow it to an auto shop for repairs.
