Many air conditioning systems have an indoor and an outdoor unit that work together to cool your home. The outdoor unit is designed to withstand the elements for as long as possible, but it still needs maintenance to run efficiently and avoid breaking down. Make sure your HVAC equipment is properly cared for by keeping it clean and safe with the following tips.

How to Maintain Your Outdoor AC Unit

1. Keep Pets Away

Curious animals can sometimes damage your HVAC equipment by climbing or digging. In the worst case, they may decide to mark the unit, leaving a mess that can corrode components and even cause coolant leaks. Keep a fence between your pets and the outdoor AC unit.

2. Clear Away Leaves & Debris

Leaves and twigs can easily get stuck in the unit's vents, blocking airflow. Clean them out regularly—ideally every month—to avoid overworking the fan motors and make sure heat can escape. Also, trim plants back at least 2 feet to avoid trapping air and heat.

3. Clean the Gutters

HVACWhile the gutters are separate from the AC unit, they often run right above the HVAC equipment or close to it. This means that when the gutter is clogged and leaking, it can drip on your AC unit. Clean your gutters regularly to prevent them from backing up, and keep an eye out for leaks that need to be fixed.

4. Schedule Professional Cooling Maintenance

Every HVAC unit should be inspected and tuned up by a professional at least once a year. They'll take a look inside the unit, clean it, and ensure all components are in good shape. They'll also catch developing problems early, making repairs easier and preventing breakdowns.
