If you’ve been dealing with the same health condition for months or even years, and you aren’t satisfied with the results of your standard medical treatment, you may have been urged to visit a naturopathic doctor by a friend or coworker. Unfortunately, many patients avoid reaching out to these professionals because of the common misconception that they don’t have as much training as traditional doctors. If you’re eager to know whether or not this treatment path is reputable, consider the following introduction.

Understanding Naturopathic Doctors’ Training

How Does a Naturopathic Doctor Differ From a Conventional One?

When the average person considers a doctor’s role in their lifestyle, they might think of their ability to prescribe medication based on a diagnosis. In this right, naturopathic physicians have the same training and ability as conventional doctors—they pursue an education in pharmacology, which allows them to prescribe drugs. However, they opt to try other solutions first, such as nutrition, supplements, holistic treatments, and botanical medicine, often considering pharmaceutical drugs a last resort.

What Training Have They Undergone?

First, both conventional and naturopathic medical schools required a high school diploma or GED, followed by a Bachelor’s degree. From there, naturopathic students may take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Just like traditional medical school, naturopathic medical schools offer accredited, full-time, four-year programs. During the first two years, physicians focus on essential sciences like anatomy, biochemistry, and genetics.

In their final years, medical students will focus in on whatever specialization they’re most interested in, such as botanical medicine, acupuncture, or naturopathic manipulative therapy. They’ll also spend their final years in hospitals and clinics, practicing their skills in a supervised environment.

Finally, to become a doctor, both standard doctors and naturopathic physicians must pass medical board exams. Once students pass the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), they can apply for a license to practice. Depending on the state, they must also complete continuing education credits to maintain their license. They may also pursue board certification, such as through the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
