What does “equity” mean?

The definition of equity is leveling access so that opportunities are fair and impartial.  The center is transformed, and affects things from the inside out.

As you can see in the picture attached to this post, the three people are trying to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.  The wall that is keeping some from seeing the view represents systemic barriers to opportunities.  The boxes that people are standing on represent the support and assistance they receive in order to gain those opportunities.

In the first image, people not only have different starting points, but also our institutions and structures are set up to reinforce these advantages and inequities.  This is the reality we live in.

In the second image, it is assumed that everyone will benefit from the same supports.  They are treated equally.

In the third image, individuals are given different supports to equalize access to the view.  This is equity.

In the fourth image, all three people can see the sunrise without any supports or accommodations because of the inequity that was addressed.

Now…how does equity relate to the Pets for Life program?

Have you ever tried taking your 80lb Pitbull on the Wheels bus to get his vaccines updated?  Ever walked 5 miles in the rain for cat food?  Maybe you’ve had to make the heartbreaking decision to choose between buying your own medication or that of your pet’s?

Pets for Life hears you, and understands.

Poverty and structural inequity creates a variety of obstacles that families in poverty face each day.  This includes and is not limited to access to healthy food, education, jobs, health care, housing, and much more.  Government programs such as social security, housing vouchers, and food stamps currently exist to assist people in need.  In that same spirit, Pets for Life is working towards pet services as bring part of a more robust system of support.

Nutmeg Spay/Neuter Clinic is proud to be a bridge to services people need and want for their pets and be the catalyst for comprehensive veterinary care, supplies, and information for underserved communities such as the 06608 zip code of Bridgeport, CT.
