If you’re planning to build a deck, choosing materials is the first place to start. Not just any wood will do; decks face the elements every day and have to provide unmatched support. There are three types of wood used for deck building: redwood, cedar, and pressure-treated wood. You’ll find everything you need to know about each below to help you make a decision.

Your Guide to Choosing Wood for Deck Building

Cedar

deck-building-st-evans-incCedar is naturally moisture-resistant, making it perfect for rainy or humid regions. Rot and the insects it attracts can cause serious structural issues that lead to costly repairs or even collapse. Cedar changes its moisture content to match its surroundings. It’s also an excellent deck building material for cold environments, since it will stand up to freeze-thaw cycles that usually lead to splitting and warping.

Redwood

Like cedar, redwood is naturally resistant to decay and insects. Its durability prevents warping, checking, and splitting, and since it has an open-cell structure, you won’t have to worry about pitch or resins. It’s a premium wood that comes with a higher price tag. For the cost, however, you’ll receive beautiful, unique results that accommodate a variety of wood stains and hold up well over the years.

Pressure-Treated

Pressure-treated lumber is the cheapest deck building material. It’s naturally rot- and insect-resistant; however, it’s less stable than cedar, redwood, and other materials. It may shrink or warp over time. Many deck builders choose to use it for the supports and select cedar or redwood for visible flooring and railing, so you get the best of both worlds.
