After you’ve hired a company to do some asphalt paving for your driveway, don’t let wear and tear damage it. Summer heat can be tough on blacktop, and you might discover some damage from the winter weather. Being proactive can help protect your new investment.

3 Ways to Keep Your Asphalt Paving Safe From the Summer Heat

1. Don’t Use Sharp Objects Near the Driveway

During the summer months, the asphalt is softer and easier to damage because of high temperatures. The hotter it is outside, the more stress the driveway is under. This means that sharp tools used for yard work that get dropped on the asphalt are more likely to cause damage. If you want to use these tools near your driveway, try to do so during the early morning or late evening hours when the surface is cooler.

2. Repair Any Damage

asphalt pavingSummer is a fantastic time to repair any cracks or holes in your asphalt paving. This is because a lot of damage to asphalt is caused by water, and summer is the time of year that people run sprinklers, water plants, wash cars, and hose down the driveway. Water can seep into these cracks and degrade the material underneath the asphalt, which will cause damage.

To repair small cracks, buy some rubberized asphalt-emulsion crack filler and apply it using a caulking gun. This will keep you from getting filler on other parts of the driveway. Then, smooth it down with a putty knife and let it dry.

3. Reseal the Driveway

Driveways need to be sealed every three to five years. Resealing your driveway can protect it from heat, salt, gas, or water. To seal your driveway, remove any debris from your pavement, then pour the sealer from one side of the pavement to the other, starting at the garage. Then, using a driveway squeegee tool, spread a thin layer of coating vertically, then another horizontally. Make sure they cover 100% of the asphalt surface.
