While the occasional drink can be an enjoyable indulgence, and moderate consumption of certain types of alcohol can have health benefits, more frequent drinking poses potential dangers to the teeth, gums, and mouth. Understanding the ways drinking impacts your oral health will ensure you take proper care of your teeth and better manage all alcohol consumption. Below are some of the oral health effects that dentists often see in drinkers and how to mitigate or prevent this damage.

Effects

Staining of the teeth is a common byproduct of drinking. All alcohol contains acids that attack and weaken tooth enamel, which makes a tooth's surface more vulnerable. As a result, the substances found in many alcohols, like the chromogens and tannins in wine, more readily attach to them and discolor them.

Dry mouth is another issue caused by drinking alcohol. Because alcohol dehydrates the system, the salivary glands don't receive healthy stimulation and aren't able to produce enough moisture to keep the mouth comfortably wet. Saliva is crucial to rinsing plaque and food particles from the teeth.

People who are problem drinkers have higher levels of plaque on the teeth. They are also three times as likely to suffer permanent tooth loss.

Prevention

dentistSome alcohols are less damaging to the teeth than others. Clear or lighter-colored spirits are less apt to stain. Gin is the least acidic alcohol one can drink, and it contains no sugar so, from a dental health perspective, gin is one of the smarter beverage choices. But be aware of the mixers you use; sodas, fruit juices, and even tonic water contain an abundance of sugar.

To prevent tooth damage and more frequent trips to the dentist, always order a glass of water with your drink and take occasional sips to keep the teeth rinsed of alcohol. After drinking, brush your teeth for at least two minutes and floss thoroughly; a fluoride mouthwash is a smart idea as well. If you notice any pain, sensitivity, or other tooth-related issues, promptly schedule an appointment with a dentist so you can stay on top of problems before they start.
