Before they enter a property, burglars often survey it weeks or days in advance to understand your habits. This practice is known as “casing.” While a security system may deter them and keep your home safe, there are still some ways to tell when people with underlying motives are observing your property. To help you prevent any issues, here are a few common methods they use.

How to Tell When a Burglar Is Watching Your Home

1. An Unfamiliar Car Is Frequently Outside

After living in a neighborhood for an extended period, you may start recognizing most of the vehicles that drive in the area. The presence of a new model is not necessarily a cause for alarm, but you should be suspicious if you frequently see it parked outside your home. If there’s always someone inside or the windows are heavily tinted, there’s a possibility it isn’t just a neighbor’s new purchase.

2. Someone Takes Pictures of the House

People take pictures of everything these days, from pets they encounter on the street to what they’re having for lunch. That doesn’t make it any less strange when you notice someone snapping a picture of your house, then quickly walking away. Unless your residence has particularly stunning architecture, taking pictures could be a red flag.

3. You’re Subject to Door-to-Door Solicitations

Also, be wary about providing any personal information to solicitors, as it may be used for nefarious purposes. Even if you have a home security system in place, don’t open your door to strangers unless you’re sure of who they are.

4. Your House Is Physically Marked

Another tactic used by burglars in some instances is marking the location they plan on visiting later. This makes the property identifiable to other criminal partners. Flyers and stickers are common marking methods, although some intruders get even more bold by using graffiti. If you spot items in your property that do not belong to you, remove them promptly to be safe.
