For most people, their fine jewelry is one of their most treasured accessories. Whether it’s an engagement ring, a cherished gift, heirloom from grandma or something that you bought for yourself, proper care and maintenance is a must to keep it beautiful for a lifetime. Here is a helpful guide on taking care of your prized pieces. These tips will keep them sparkling for years to come and prevent damage that would require jewelry repairs.

3 Steps for Taking Care of Jewelry

1. Avoid Chemicals

Household and personal care products often contain chemicals that damage gold, silver, and platinum. Some gemstones are also prone to chemical discoloration. Simple steps, such as removing your jewelry before using an ammonia-based household cleaner or before plunging into a swimming pool, can help avoid the need for jewelry repairs in the future. Try not to expose precious pieces directly to products like hairsprays or perfumes as well, especially with pearls.

2. Use Mild Cleaners

Do not clean over an open sink drain unless covered by a strainer. Be gentle when cleaning small spaces between precious metals and gemstones to avoid extra damage.

3. Limit Exposure to Light & Heat

Light and heat can also lead to gemstone damage. Excessive exposure to sunlight could damage gemstones like Opals, Tanzanite or Emeralds.  Pearls and ivory pieces, on the other hand, may tend to bleach under extreme light. Heat can also cause jewelry to discolor and fade. When not in use, it’s best to keep pieces in a box with separate compartments. Keep the box in a place away from moisture, heat, and extreme sunlight.
