A clean, well-maintained pool is irresistible on a warm day, so keep your pool in good condition to extend its lifespan and make sure it’s safe for everyone to use. Below are some key tips for keeping swimming pools in excellent condition.

How to Keep Your Swimming Pool Clean

1. Check the Water Level

Make sure the water level isn’t too high or too low. The ideal water level for swimming pools is at the center of your skimmer, which is the gutter on the side of your pool. If the water level is too low, the pump could run dry; if it’s too high, the skimmer might not work efficiently.

2. Clean the Filter

When it comes to swimming pool filters, cleaning is about balance. A filter that’s always sparklingly clean is actually less effective than a slightly dirty one, because existing debris traps new dirt. Pressure levels let you know when it’s time to clean your filter, so if there’s a rise of 10 psi above normal then you’ll want to clean it out.

3. Check the Pool’s Chemistry

Measure your pool’s pH to check acid or alkaline levels. The pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.8, and a pH reading on the lower end of that range means you’ll need less chlorine. The pH level of swimming pools should be tested once or twice a week in summer and weekly in winter.

4. Skim Your Pool & Clean the Skimmer Basket

Swimming poolsWhether you’re skimming by hand or using an automatic skimmer, it’s important to clear debris from the surface before it sinks to the bottom and becomes harder to clean. It’s also vital to empty basket in the pool’s built-in skimmer at least once a week to improve circulation and reduce the need for chlorine.

5. Check for Leaks

Check for leaks in your pool using the bucket test. Fill a bucket three-quarters full and mark two lines on it, one for the water level inside and one for the outside. Then leave the bucket floating in the pool for a couple of days. If the pool’s water level has gone below the water level inside the bucket, you’ll know the water loss is due to a leak. You should then call a professional to fix the leak.
