Regardless of whether or not you’re a parent, it’s essential to know that some schools are back in session as soon as mid-August. As children get back in buses and on the roads, stay safe and avoid the need to file an insurance claim by using the following back-to-school safety tips on the road.

Behind-the-Wheel Safety

School Buses

insuranceWhen driving, keep an eye out for buses that come to a complete stop—regardless of whether or not you’re in a school zone. At this point, the amber lights will turn off and two sets of red lights (at the front and the rear of the bus) will start flashing to alert drivers that children are coming onto or stepping off of the bus. You might also see a stop sign descend on the left side of the bus.

If you are on the road with three or fewer lanes, all traffic moving in either direction must stop 10 feet or more from the front or back of the bus. Once you come to a complete stop, don’t start moving until the bus does, or until the driver signals you to move.

Student Drivers

As school gets back in session, be aware of high school students taking driver’s education courses and driver’s tests. If a car is part of a driver’s education course, it will be marked with the name of the company or a visible “student driver” sticker. Knowing that these are not experienced drivers, be extra conscious if you are following or passing these cars, as they might abruptly stop or switch lanes.

School Bus Safety

If your child will be a bus rider, it’s crucial to teach them how to stay safe when getting on and off the vehicle. Here are some basic tips to give your children:

  • To start, teach them how to identify a crosswalk, and how to decipher the hand motions of the crossing guard. A flat palm means stop, and the guard moving their hand toward their body means that it’s safe to cross the street.
  • You should also encourage your child to head to the bus in a group, such as with siblings or classmates.
  • Teach your little one to look both ways before crossing the street, even if the traffic stops when they are about to get on or off their bus.
  • They should also know about the bus driver’s blind spot—the zone from the front of the bus to about 10 feet in front of it—so they can avoid approaching the bus from this angle.

Make sure your child follows these guidelines to keep them safe as they head back to school. While adult supervision is provided, it’s best to keep your child as informed as possible to avoid any accidents or injuries that could result in the need to involve an insurance agent.
