While keepsakes aren’t required as part of a memorial service, they can be a way for family and friends to remember their loved one. Typically, the trinkets are handed out as guests leave to symbolize how they’re taking the loved one’s memory with them. Before deciding whether or not to include keepsakes as part of the memorial service, consider the wishes of your loved one and what keepsake would be appropriate.

Is It Appropriate to Hand Out Keepsakes?

Most importantly, only hand out keepsakes if your loved one would have wanted that gesture. If they wished for a small, intimate, and quick memorial service, a memento might be too flashy. But if they collected trinkets and collectibles during their life, it would be fitting to continue the tradition at their funeral service.

Additionally, keep your friends and family in mind. Often, keepsakes help people, as they’re items that commemorate their loved one in such an emotional time. If a keepsake would comfort those mourning, strongly consider handing them out.

What Type of Keepsakes Are Suitable?

Memorial ServiceEngraved items—such as candles or keychains—are ideal keepsakes. Friends and family will remember their loved one whenever they use the item. You can also laminate the obituary along with your loved one’s favorite poem, song, or Bible verse for attendees to frame. You can also provide small picture frames engraved with the loved one’s birth and passing date. Include the deceased’s favorite picture and hand them out to immediate family members as a gesture of unity and comfort.

A popular memorial service trend is to hand out small bags of flower seeds to plant in memory of your loved one. Attached to the bag is a small card with the name and birth date of the departed, along with a meaningful quote.
