Getting around may become difficult due to illness, injury, or the effects of aging, and mobility aids can provide extra support. Mobility aids improve balance and stability, ensuring that you can still enjoy activities safely and comfortably. Since there are several aids to choose from, here’s a guide to help you select the best option.

Different Types of Mobility Aids

1. Canes

A single point cane can help when you need a little extra support for your leg, improving balance and reducing pain by taking weight off pressure points. A quad cane is similar, but it offers extra stability by featuring a wider base with four supports. Canes are best suited to people who have light to moderate difficulty walking.

2. Walkers

Walkers are the most supportive mobility aids, and they’re ideal for people who are experiencing trouble with balance. Walkers have four adjustable legs and hand grips to provide stability as you move. However, since they need to be lifted to move forward, a standard walker isn’t the best choice if you have limited upper body strength. If this is the case, a wheeled walker is a better choice, as it can be pushed instead of lifted. Using a walker properly requires some instruction and practice, and it can’t be used on stairs.

3. Rollators

They’re more advanced than a standard walker as they include a hand brake and a tote for carrying necessities, and some models feature a seat for taking a break. Like regular walkers, rollators are ideal for people who need extra stability and support to get around on their own.

4. Scooters

Scooters grant independence as well as the ability to cover more terrain than other types of aides. Although scooters aren’t practical for home use and are pricier than other options, they’re ideal for people who want to stay active and continue to travel, shop, or go on outings. They’re best suited for anyone recovering from an injury or who has a chronic condition, like COPD or arthritis, that makes it difficult to be active for long periods.
