Nutmeg Clinic is an official mentorship for the Humane Society of the United States Pets for Life (PFL) Program.  This program provides access to free veterinary care, services, and information to people and their pets with limited or nonexistent access to pet wellness resources. The initiative’s philosophy promotes the understanding that a lack of financial means does not equate to a lack of love felt for and provided to the pet.  Everyone’s lives can be enhanced by a pet, and those who chose to should have the opportunity to experience the unconditional love and meaningful relationship that a pet brings.

Systemic poverty and structural inequity create obstacles similar to the challenges people experience in accessing healthy food, education, jobs, healthcare, and housing.  The program cultivates equal opportunities for all pet owners – regardless of race, ethnicity, income level, and geography.  Government program such as social security, housing vouchers, foods stamps, etc. currently exist to provide a variety of assistance to people. In that same spirit, recognizing the emotional, mental, and physical benefits a pet brings, PFL is working towards pet services as being part of a more robust system of support.
