Going to the dentist can make many children feel anxious. They may be afraid of the unknown or worried about the potential for pain and discomfort. If they’ve never been to the office before, they may just not know what to expect. Fortunately, there are some things you can do as a parent to help ease your child's fear of the dentist. Below are a few helpful suggestions.

How to Help a Child Overcome Their Fear of the Dentist

1. Talk to the Dentist

Before the start of the exam or procedure, share your child's concerns with the dentist. Most dental professionals have extensive experience putting kids' minds at ease. They can answer your child's questions, help them better understand the procedures and treatments, and introduce them to the various tools and equipment that will be used. The dentist might also have little tricks and techniques to calm and entertain the child during the appointment.

3. Monitor Drinks & Snacks Beforehand

dentistAvoid serving anything with caffeine prior to the appointment. Caffeine will only further stimulate an already-overexcited nervous system, leading to an uptick in anxiety. Choose a meal of healthy, complex carbohydrates instead. Complex carbs increase production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which has a calming effect on the body and mind. Suggestions include a serving of oatmeal, a piece of 100 percent whole wheat bread, or a bowl of wholegrain cereal.

3. Listen to Music

Music can be an excellent diversion for a child who has a fear of the dentist. Make a playlist of your child's favorite songs or music that you know will relax them or divert their attention. Bring earbuds to the appointment and slip them into your child's ears as the treatment begins. Instruct them to close their eyes and focus on the music.
