Infertility is an issue that many couples face when trying to conceive. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to overcome, however. If you and your partner are experiencing issues with conception, understanding more about why infertility occurs may help you diagnose the problem. Here’s a guide to some of the common questions couples have when they’re trying to have a baby.

FAQ on Infertility

What causes it?

Fertility problems can originate in men or women. In men, infertility may be caused by problems with sperm production or how sperm move, which is referred to as motility. In women, infertility may stem from ovulation issues, blockages in the fallopian tubes, or medical conditions like endometriosis, which interferes with intercourse and makes it more difficult to become pregnant.

What are the risk factors?

infertilityThe older a person gets, the harder conception tends to be. This is true of both men and women, who experience declines in fertility rates in their 30s and 40s. Lifestyle factors also play a role. Drinking and smoking reduce the likelihood of pregnancy. For women, weight can also be a factor. Being over- or underweight disrupts ovulation, which in turn makes it harder to get pregnant.

When should I seek a doctor’s help?

Even young and healthy couples experience delays when trying to conceive. In this case, couples are recommended to wait about a year before seeking assistance from a fertility doctor. If risk factors are present or you’re in your late 30s or older, it’s best to seek help as soon as possible. Time is of the essence, so the sooner you get to work, the better your chances of conception.

What is in vitro fertilization?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a common solution for fertility issues. Both men and women will undergo rigorous testing to understand health issues that could be contributing to the problem. Next, women will be given synthetic hormones to increase egg production. Eggs will then be retrieved and combined with sperm outside of the body. After fertilization, embryos are transferred back to the womb.
