Every children's dentist at Pedodontic Associates Inc. is all too familiar with toothaches and their causes. Kids tend to be especially susceptible to cavities and tooth decay because of the types of foods they like to eat. Many foods that are considered healthy can do serious damage to your teeth if eaten in excess. Acidic and sugary foods like fruit juices, a favorite among kids, will do the most damage to a tooth’s enamel. Once you become familiar with the types of food that do more harm to enamel, taking care of your dental care and the dental care of your family can be easy.

Which foods are most and least likely to negatively impact enamel?

  • Lemons, grapefruit, strawberries, grapes, apples and soda will do the most damage to a tooth’s enamel. Limit your child's exposure to these foods.
  • Tomatoes, oranges, pineapple, cottage cheese, maple syrup, yogurt, raisins, pickles and honey can moderately damage tooth enamel.
  • Milk, most cheeses and eggs have the smallest impact on tooth enamel.

To prevent enamel damage and keep your child's teeth healthy, try to cut down on highly acidic foods. Parents should try cutting soda and fruit juices entirely out of their children’s diets if they are having dental problems. Brushing your teeth after every meal, especially after eating something acidic, is a smart way to preserve enamel, too. Flossing daily is another important way of ensuring no traces of sugar or acid are left on your teeth.
