Parking lots of hospitals, clinics, and rehab facilities are often bustling with activity. That’s why the pavement markings and signs must be clearly visible to direct ambulances as well as employee and patient vehicles in and out of areas quickly while keeping pedestrians safe in the process. To ensure you comply with Americans With Disabilities Act standards, follow the guidelines outlined below.

3 Accessibility Rules for Medical Facility Parking Lots

1. Place Accessible Spaces Near All Accessible Entrances

Many medical buildings have main entrances as well as side doors that patients can access. Your parking lot must have accessible parking spaces on each side of the building with these entrances. The spaces must be located in the most direct, shortest route to the facility doors.

2. Make Sure 20% of Spaces Are Accessible

Waimanalo-Hawaii-pavement-markingFor rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy facilities, a certain percentage of spaces must be accessible. This minimizes the risk of people with health issues that impact mobility getting injured while traveling from the parking lot to the building. To follow the rules, make sure 20% of the spaces have the required space and pavement markings.

3. Use Signage to Identify Spaces

In addition to pavement markings, signs must be placed near accessible parking spaces, rising 60 inches high for clear visibility. The International Symbol of Accessibility must be featured on the displays. If vans can fit into the spaces, “van accessible” must also feature prominently on the sign or on an additional marker placed under it.
