Whether it was an action figure or a toy dump-truck, there was nothing better than taking care of your favorite toy as a child. As an adult, antique car collectors bring the same passion and attention to detail to their classic vehicles. If you’re hoping to keep your investment in tip-top shape, use this list to your advantage.

How to Maintain Your Antique Car

1. Cover It Up

When you’re not cruising your classic ride around town, it should remain in an enclosed garage—not under a carport or out in the driveway. However, it should also be protected with a custom-fit cover. This will prevent water and moisture in the air from creating rust on the metal components, as well as scuffs and scratches from foot traffic, stray balls, and leaves and other natural debris.

2. Clean & Wax It

antique carIt can’t stay under that cover forever; you’ll need to disrobe it every few weeks for a thorough wash and wax. Never take your antique car to a standard vehicle wash. Instead, hand-wash it with a soft, microfiber cloth and a cleaning solution that’s specially made for its unique finish. Every six months, apply a classic car-approved wax to keep the auto body gleaming and scratch-free.

3. Have It Inspected

When it comes to your everyday vehicle, you may only go to see a mechanic when something feels out of place. However, when it comes to maintaining an antique car, the best maintenance is preventive. Head to a mechanic who specializes in classic vehicles at least once or twice a year, so they can inspect your investment from hood to hubcap. After all, you can’t easily replace a one-of-a-kind car from the past.
