Sump pumps are typically reliable pieces of equipment. That doesn’t mean, however, that they never fail. Even if the chance is fairly low, it’s important to know what to do if your sump pump overflows. Taking swift action will reduce potential flood damage and get your drainage system working properly again as quickly as possible.

4 Possible Solutions to a Malfunctioning Sump Pump

1. Reset the Sump Pump

Sometimes, a hard reset is all it takes to get the system running again. To reset your pump, pull its plug and wait a few minutes before plugging it back in. This is a quick fix if the sump pump starts working again, although you should still schedule an inspection to make sure nothing is seriously wrong.

2. Restart the Motor

If resetting the sump pump didn’t work, restarting its motor might. After lifting the basin cover and unplugging the pump, pull up on the float switch. Under normal circumstances, this will restart the motor and get the system working again. If it doesn’t, there may be a serious mechanical issue that should be repaired ASAP to prevent flood damage.

3. Clear the Weep Hole & Discharge Line

flood damageThe weep hole is a tiny hole between the check valve and the sump pump itself while the discharge line is the pipe that sends water outside of your home. Over time, both of these can become clogged with various debris and potentially lead to flood damage. The weep hole can be cleared with a thin piece of wire and the discharge line can be cleaned with a plumbing snake. Check the outside of the discharge line as well to make sure no foliage has clogged the exit.

4. Install a Battery Backup & Alarm

A sump pump should always have a battery backup installed. Even in the event of a power outage or blown fuse, the battery will keep the sump pump working and prevent major flood damage from occurring. In addition to the battery backup, it’s helpful to have an alarm that goes off if the battery backup fails or needs replacing. With these in place, the system will work properly when you need it the most.
