Your commercial refrigeration equipment works constantly and likely makes up for a sizeable chunk of your energy usage. Proper maintenance will ensure that your refrigerators and freezers are working as efficiently as possible while also extending their usable life span. Follow this simple checklist to maximize your investment in the equipment.

Maintenance for Commercial Refrigeration Equipment

Defrost

Check your owner’s manual instructions for defrosting, including the steps for how it should be done and how often it should be done. Defrosting too often creates unnecessary work for the refrigerator, while doing it too infrequently will put a significant strain on the system.

Maximize Airflow

commercial refrigerationYour units need proper airflow inside and out. Avoid overcrowding inside the unit so the air can circulate freely; it will work most efficiently if it’s mostly full with empty space between each item on the shelves. Clear the space around the air intake and exhaust vents to allow free airflow around the exterior. Check airflow weekly for optimal performance.

Inspect Seals

The seals and gaskets around your commercial refrigeration doors are essential to efficiency. When they’re worn or loose, the conditioned air will leak out of the unit. Minor gasket leaks can typically be repaired with silicone caulk, while damaged seals can be replaced. Check that the doors are tightly closing on a monthly basis. In addition to conducting a visual inspection, close the doors and drag your fingers slowly around the edges to feel for escaping air.

Clean Coils

Grime can accumulate quickly on the condenser and evaporator coils and block the transfer of heat. Inspect and clean these monthly. You can check your owner’s manual for instructions on locating and cleaning your coils.
