Living with persistent discomfort can be frustrating. In particular, knee pain can impact mobility and your ability to perform daily activities. Here’s a quick guide that provides more insight into what causes this injury and how to effectively treat it.

What Causes It?

knee painKnee pain is often caused by joint wear and tear. For example, if you play a sport that puts a lot of strain on this ligament, you may develop discomfort as it weakens over time. This damage may also be directly related to a specific injury, such as a torn ACL or fractured bone. Knee pain also occurs due to autoimmune diseases, like psoriasis or arthritis.

How Is It Treated?

Treatment options depend on the cause of your condition. If you’re uncomfortable because of an injury that will heal over time, treating the damage with temperature therapy is ideal, and you’ll use ice packs to decrease inflammation. Wrap ice in a cloth to prevent freezing skin, and apply it for 20 minutes four to eight times a day. To reduce swelling further, lay down and prop the leg on a pillow to elevate it above the heart.

If the pain is due to an ongoing issue, such as worn out ligaments or medical conditions, you may want to opt for regular physical therapy sessions. During these sessions, you’ll learn stretches and exercises that will strengthen the knees and receive lifestyle tips to minimize further damage.
