Moving can be a daunting task, no matter how near or far your new home is. While there are quite a few steps involved with a relocation, you can streamline the process with a detailed timeline that provides steps to tackle at each interval leading up to your move. Although you may need to tweak it slightly to fit your specific needs, here is a checklist you can use to prepare for an upcoming move.

2 Months Out

If you know you’ll be moving within the next couple of months, begin cleaning out your belongings to decide what you’ll keep, donate, or discard. Now is also the time to begin researching moving companies. Look for movers in your area and check to see if they offer products or services that could make your relocation easier, such as packing services and materials. Request quotes so you can find the option to best meet your budget.

6 Weeks Out

About six weeks before your move, begin acquiring moving supplies. If you have a three-bedroom house, plan to have at least 25 medium boxes, 15 large boxes, and 10 extra-large boxes. A one-bedroom apartment, on the other hand, may only need half those amounts. Now is also the time to notify schools if your children are enrolled, request medical records, and book a moving company.

1 Month Out

relocationWhen you’re one month away, begin packing up any non-essential items you won’t need to use in the next month. You should also notify utility companies as well as service providers of your moving date, along with your new address to which they can send any remaining bills.

1 Week Before

With just seven days remaining, the week before your relocation is the time to pack up remaining items. You can also notify your bank, credit card providers, and any other services for which you receive mail of your new address. Stop by your local post office to have your mail forwarded and find out if you can change your address online or if you’ll have to report to the local office near your new home.

The Day of the Move

While movers typically have their own strategy, you can help them expedite the loading process by identifying bulky or fragile items right away. You’ll also sign the bill of lading once you’ve verified everything is loaded. Do a final check of your house and make sure nothing is left behind, and get ready to enjoy your new home.
