Summer’s high temperatures make it essential that your air conditioner runs efficiently. An inefficient air conditioner won’t keep your home comfortable, and it will leave you with high energy bills all season long. Know how you can improve your efficiency in the short-term and long-term to reduce your utility bill and maintenance fees.

Keeping Your Air Conditioner Efficient

Easy & Immediate Fixes

If you haven’t changed your air conditioning filter in at least four weeks, replacing the filter will instantly improve efficiency. A clogged filter will impact airflow and slow your unit down. Check the interior vents as well and make sure the airflow there is also clear. There should be at least six inches of clear space around the vents, so move furniture and curtains as needed. Check that all vents are fully in the open position as well, unless they’re in an unoccupied room that you don’t want to be cooled.

Shut off the power at the breaker box, move all large objects around the condenser, and thoroughly hose down the outside of the unit. Make sure there are at least 24 inches of clear space all around the unit for easy airflow.

Long-Term Maintenance

Routine maintenance is the single most important thing you can do to maintain an efficient and reliable HVAC system. Bring in a heating and cooling professional twice a year — once in the spring to service your cooling and once in the fall to service your heating. They’ll clean and test the system, replacing any wearing parts and keeping it running at peak efficiency. Keep up with the maintenance in between appointments by continuing to change your air filter every 30 days.
