You may be stuck with the space you have, but perception is everything. When designed properly, any room can look and feel more spacious. Here are some do’s and don’ts for bathroom remodeling when the goal is making the room seem larger.

Do:

Mount fixtures on walls & doors.

If your bathroom is already a little cramped, towel racks and water faucets jutting out can be a problem. One way to solve this is to mount things in space-efficient spots. Try putting your towel rack on the back of the door — with some padding, of course, to stop it from hitting the wall. You can also build your sinks and faucets right into the wall to save a few inches.

Build fixtures in corners.

bathroom remodelingIf your sink, shower, or other fixture is in the middle of the wall, it’s likely taking up more space than it has to. Home remodeling practices in general involve using space efficiently, and bathroom remodeling is no different. Consider building sink and shower fixtures in corners – it’s cozier, and it’s a good way to keep floor space open.

Don’t:

Forget who will need the bathroom.

Interior design for any room is about picking the right features for the users’ needs. For example, if you don’t have kids, there’s no need to mount sinks lower unless it would help save room. If elderly or disabled individuals will be using the facilities, don’t forget to install grab bars and lower counters.

Use more storage units than necessary.

If your bathroom could get by with one shelf rather than two, or two drawers rather than three, design accordingly. Adding extra storage units for the sake of it may seem like planning ahead, but it’s really wasting space; and, you may not have much of it to spare.
