Over 50 million people in the U.S. have arthritis, making it the leading cause of disability nationwide. There are many types of this condition, but they’re all characterized by joint pain and stiffness. If you have arthritis, there are several pain management steps you can take to improve your range of motion and alleviate symptoms. To help you care for your body, here are a few do’s and don’ts to make the most of your efforts.

Do:

See a chiropractor.pain management

A chiropractor or physical therapist can go a long way in helping your pain management. This is because they won’t just target the symptoms, but also help treat the issues behind them for natural, long-term results. For example, they may use techniques such as spinal adjustments, joint manipulation, and massage therapy to help relieve pain in target areas. They may also teach you proper posture to reduce back pain and improve your range of motion.

Combat swelling.

Swelling in the joints is one of the biggest reasons arthritis patients experience pain. To relieve swelling, try over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, naproxen, or ibuprofen. Topical creams with menthol or capsaicin may also help. If your doctor believes you need another medication, they will prescribe it to you.

Don’t:

Choose high-impact exercise.

Exercise is key to managing your weight, improving range of motion, and building strength. However, high-impact activities that place strain on the joints or use repetitive motion are not suited for those with arthritis. These include running, tennis, and basketball. Exercise options for pain management include walking, cycling, or water aerobics.

Smoke.

Smoking stresses the connective tissues in the joints and damages blood vessels, which increases your pain. If you are currently a smoker, work with your doctor to quit. You may switch to e-cigarettes for a product that still contains nicotine and reduces these problems.
