Building a new luxury home is exciting; you get to pick out new fixtures, flooring, and paint. But, before you can do any of that, you need to know what your home will look like. A custom home builder will work with you to make sure they can turn your dreams into reality. But, if reading blueprints and floor plans are not your forte, start with these critical components to help you understand the lingo of the contractors working on your new home.

What to Understand About a Blueprint

1. Cover Sheet

The cover sheet of any blueprint usually contains essential information about what the final structure will look like when it’s done. Here, you’ll probably find a drawing of the outside of your home, floor plans, interior and exterior wall information, roof plan, the title block, revision block, notes, drawing scale, and anything else about the project. The cover sheet is probably one of the most essential pieces of the blueprint and will be what the new home builder references throughout the project.

2. Blueprint Scale

This measurement tool is used to ensure your home is built to the proper size. To print new home builds on paper and make them easy to read, most custom home builders will draw blueprint scales in a quarter-inch to one-foot scale, meaning that every quarter inch on paper equals one foot in reality. Understanding this scale as you read over the floor plans and blueprints will help you imagine what each room will look like and how big they will be compared to how they look on paper.

3. Legend

If you’re customizing your home, the new home construction plans for your home will include a customized legend as well. This is essentially a list of symbols that can be found throughout your home’s plans. This might include symbols for interior and exterior doors, different elevations, room numbers, and material information. It’s essential to review this legend so that, at a glance, you can understand what is happening in any particular part of your new home.
