Stocking your car with some essentials will ensure you’re protected if there’s an emergency and you can't get to an auto service shop right away. Whether your car is a daily driver to and from work or a showpiece only taken out on special occasions, keeping some basic tools on hand will keep the driver and passengers better prepared for any unforeseen challenges. Here are six important just-in-case items to have with you.

6 Things to Keep in Your Car at All Times

1. Jumper Cables

Jumper cables can be a lifesaver when stranded in a parking lot or on the side of the road. Unfortunately, the days are long gone when most drivers carried a spare set in their trunk. Take the initiative and have jumper cables on hand; this way, when someone stops to help, it will only be a matter of minutes before you're up and running again.

2. Tire Pressure Gauge

Check the owner's manual to find out the manufacturer's recommended psi for your tires, then secure the pressure gauge on the valve stem, pressing down until the hissing stops and a reading appears.

3. First Aid Kit

A first aid kit will help you tend to wounds until professional assistance arrives. Be sure the kit has bandages, alcohol wipes, sterile gauze, and adhesive tape.

4. Kitty Litter

Sprinkling kitty litter on slippery surfaces increases traction for both tires and feet and prevents sliding and nasty falls. The substance can be invaluable if your car breaks down and there’s a bit of ice on the roads. It also comes with the added benefit of serving as a dehumidifier, absorbing moisture from the air and preventing windows from fogging over. Wrap a few scoopfuls of litter in a sock, tie it shut, and put it on the dashboard on rainy days.

5. Flashlight

A flashlight can help you get around in the dark, see into tight spaces, and alert others to your presence. Even if you have a flashlight on a smartphone, carry another in your car at all times. You don't want to rely on a phone that can run out of power.

6. Duct Tape

Duct tape will secure loose parts, stop leaks, and keep rips and breakages more or less intact until you can get to an auto service shop. Store a roll in your glove compartment for easy access; you never know when the need for a quick fix will arise.
