A sunroom can make a lovely and practical addition to your home. These spaces offer all of the benefits of an enclosed outdoor patio, such as protection from sun and insects. Whether it is for seasonal or year-round use, a sunroom with the right windows will add value and appeal to your home. Below, learn how to pick the best windows for your needs.

How to Choose Sunroom Windows

1. Select a Style

sunroomSunroom windows come in a variety of styles, including fixed, double-hung, sliding, and hinged. Each style will differently accommodate the unique combination of climate, architecture, and use that your sunroom requires.

Fixed windows are best for cool climates where you wouldn’t open the windows often. Double-hung windows, on the other hand, offer beauty, customized size and construction, and maximum ventilation.

Sliding windows work well when ventilation is desired, and if you have minimum space. It’s also great if you prefer an unobstructed view. Hinged windows can open either at the top or bottom and are available in awning style or casement construction.

2. Choose Materials

The glass you choose is essential to maximize energy efficiency and to maintain an even, comfortable temperature. Avoid single glazing unless constrained by budget, as it offers little UV protection or insulating properties. Double glazed windows are more energy-efficient and will retain heat in the winter and cool air in the summer. Triple glazing is the top glass material, offering the best protection from heating and cooling loss. Whatever glass you choose, look for a soft-coat, or Low E,  that allows light in but minimizes air loss.

3. Consider Room Function & Location

The type of exposure the room has will dictate the number of windows needed as well as the level of glazing. South-facing windows will require double or triple glazing to keep the room cool enough in the summer. North or east-facing rooms will not receive as much hot sun and will need to stay warm in cool weather. If the sunroom will house plants or will be used as a sleeping porch, strong ventilation will be required. Talk to an experienced contractor about where and how you envision the room.
