When someone close to you dies, you may have to select an outfit for them to wear at the funeral. You may want to choose their favorite shirt or dress, but there are other factors you have to consider. Here are a few tips to help you make the decision your loved one would want.

3 Considerations When Selecting a Burial Outfit

1. Personalize Their Look

Consider the personality of the decedent and dress them the way they’d like to be seen. If they were casual and free-spirited, then a suit may not be the best option. If you are unsure, you can also consider a traditional burial gown or robe, as they provide a neutral yet dignified look.

2. Consider an Eco-friendly Burial

funeralGreen and woodland burials are becoming more common. In environmentally friendly funerals, embalming is not allowed, and their clothing must be made of natural materials such as cotton, bamboo, or wool. Elastic waistbands, metal zippers, buttons, and nylon must be removed from the clothing. Everything worn should be biodegradable. Note that everyday items like rubber-soled shoes, eyewear, and treated leather are not acceptable.

3. Follow Standard Practices for a Traditional Burial

If you are having a traditional burial for your loved one, dress them in a suit, a dress, or a burial shroud if they are devout. If the decedent was a policeman or in the military, it’s common to bury them in their uniforms. Jewelry, pictures, and other meaningful items may be buried with the deceased. These items can be given back to the bereaved after the viewing if desired.
