Decorative metal fabrication, sometimes referred to as industrial or steampunk, used to be a way of life. Dilapidated homes had exposed vents, ducts, and pipe work displayed all through the home. When going for an industrial look, it’s not always best to just have something made new, but consider taking something old and enhancing it with metal—repurposing it. Here are a few ideas to get the gears rolling in your head.

Metal Fabrication Ideas for Your Home

1. Living Room

Metal FabricationIf you have natural woods present, then go with wrought iron to accentuate. Dark wood and black metal tables, entertainment system, shelves, and even picture frames can add an interesting look to your living room. Combine it with natural coloring for a neutral look, or look at some dark burgundy drapes for a splash of color. A black railing can go behind the couch, or some larger railings can act as a room divider. If steampunk sounds fun, metal gears on the walls, iron-caged lights hanging from the ceiling, and a wrought-iron wrapped globe can add to the style you’re looking for.

2. Kitchen

The kitchen is easy to go overboard. Ducts and large pipes can maneuver across the ceiling—either functional or for display—metal chairs, and ceiling-mounted pot racks above the stove are all options. If you’re looking for something large and bold, then consider metal-caged shelving that takes up the entire wall. It would extend about 8 to 12 inches from the wall and have a movable mesh screen to secure items. Wine bottles, cookbooks, and knickknacks can fill the shelves.

3. Office

This is your private area, and you can go all out here. An inset metal bookcase, metal hanging lamps, and a wood and metal desk would give an industrial look that many would be envious of. Add a metal-framed door with wrought-iron trim, and you’ve created the perfect den. An old leather couch, with a metal-trimmed chest sitting next to it, would be a great addition for guests.
