A leak in your water lines may eventually become severe enough that you’ll notice a drain on the water pressure. Unfortunately, a leak may persist for a long time before it reaches that stage. In order to avoid a costly drain on your water usage, learning how to detect leaks earlier can save you a significant amount of money.

When Do You Have a Leak in Your Water Line?

1. Mold Growth

Since pipes leave the joints and the surrounding surfaces wet or damp, this is the ideal environment for mold growth. Be especially watchful for mold in the kitchen and bathroom since these are common areas for leaks.

2. Soft Wood

If you have a leak in the water lines behind the walls, chances are good that the water will spray the walls from the inside. While you may not notice wetness, this portion of the wall may become soft or the paint may begin to bubble. If you see or feel any changes to the wall in a specific area, a leak in your plumbing system may be to blame.

3. Pest Control Problems Water lines

A water leak may invite unwanted guests into your home by providing a weak point at which they can gain entry. Once inside, either insects or rodents are more likely to nest near a water leak since this will provide them with a regular source of water. If you do have a pest infestation, it may be wise to call a plumber as well as a fumigator.

4. Sounds of Running or Trickling Water

Another indication that there may be a leak somewhere is the sound of running water. While it’s normal to hear water running through the pipes as you use a sink, washing machine, or shower, you shouldn’t hear anything when an appliance is not in use. If you do hear a trickle or the flow of water, you should consult a plumber as soon as possible.
