Keeping your child’s closet organized isn’t just about helping you keep your sanity. An organized closet that helps with decluttering the room also teaches your child responsible, organized habits. And if done right, it can also help them become more independent. Here are a few tips for getting started.

4 Easy Ways to Design an Organized Closet for Your Kid

1. Use Closed Drawers in the Design

Decluttering a room has a lot to do with how much storage you make available. Having many drawers to keep stuff away and stored out of sight can help a lot. Think about designing a closet space that gives your child separate drawers for underwear, socks, and other items. Not only does this teach them that every item has a place, but it can also discourage them from throwing items on the closet floor.

2. Make Room for Toys

declutteringToys are going to be thrown in the closet. Whether or not they have a place to go is up to you. Include lots of storage boxes or cubbies for stuffed animals and loose blocks to go. Label the storage appropriately, so your child knows which cubby is for toys and which is for shoes. This will help prevent toys from being shoved under the bed or left on the floor. And often, your child will appreciate having a “home” for their favorite toys.

3. Use Bright Colors

The more visually enticing you can make the closet space, the more your child will be inclined to use it. This can work to your advantage. By labeling or painting drawers different colors, it gives your child an easy visual cue of what goes where. And recruiting them to help you label will make them feel invested in their own space.

4. Keep Storage Accessible

While it’s true that a really organized closet will use all available space, for an organized closet to be truly functional for your child, they need to be able to reach things. When purchasing a closet set, look for rods that can be easily adjusted and raised up as your child gets older. Plan to have hangers and cubbies at eye level and use the upper space for items they won’t need to reach.
