Bad breath is a common problem for many people, children included. If your child has constant bad breath, it may be a sign to see your family dentist and find out what’s causing it. Here’s what you should know about halitosis in kids, and what to do about it.

What Is Halitosis?

Everyone experiences bad breath throughout their lives. Halitosis is chronic bad breath, and it’s something even children can experience. It can often smell like rotten eggs and can be embarrassing. Your family dentist can diagnose halitosis usually based on odor alone.

What Causes It?

The leading cause of halitosis is poor oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing twice a day can greatly reduce the risk of bad breath in children and adults. It also might be due to dry mouth, which can cause bacteria to spread quickly. Other causes may be swollen tonsils or sinus and mouth infections.

How Is It Treated?

For most, chronic bad breath is treatable at home with improved oral hygiene practices. If your child already brushes and flosses regularly, consider adding tongue cleaning and mouthwash to their regimen. Treating halitosis-causing infections can also help eliminate odors. You should contact your family dentist for the best treatment options.

When Should You Bring Your Child to a Dentist?

If your child’s bad breath doesn’t improve with regular brushing and flossing, it may be time to take them to your family dentist. Red flags include signs of infection accompanying bad breath, such as a white buildup on the tonsils or gums.

How Can You Prevent It?

Brushing, flossing, and using alcohol-free mouthwash at least twice a day is the best prevention for halitosis. Foods that cause bad breath, such as garlic, onions, meats, and spices, should be restricted or avoided to lower the risk. Annual teeth cleanings can also help maintain a healthy mouth and keep bad breath at bay.
