If you have a plumbing leak, you may notice foundation cracks, mold buildups, and pooling water on your floors. However, some problems are not as obvious, and you may need help from a plumber to determine whether or not you have leaks. Before calling a plumbing professional, try these steps.

3 Ways to Determine If You Have Plumbing Leaks

1. Look at Water Usage

The average four-person household uses approximately 12,000 gallons of water per month. Your monthly utility bill should tell you how much water you’ve used during the previous billing cycle. If the number is several thousand gallons higher than average, you likely have a leak.

2. Check Your Water Meter

If the leak detector moves within an hour or two, you likely have a fast leak. If it doesn’t move for a few hours, you may have a slow leak.

3. Keep Track of Your Bills

Keep track of your average water expenses, and look for unexplained spikes in your utility bills. Your water bill should remain fairly consistent from month to month, so if you notice that it increases by 50 to 100 dollars or more, and you haven’t ordered any additional services, you may have a leak. Keep in mind that you may not necessarily see a leak, as many can be found in the pipes below ground, requiring you to hire a plumber.
