Adopting a dog is rewarding and fulfilling, both for you and your new pup. While the most important thing you can give your dog is a loving home, there are also some steps you should take to promote the health and safety of your pup. From acquiring supplies to arranging for spay or neuter services, here are the essential steps to take after bringing your new dog home from the shelter.

5 Tasks to Tackle Before Adopting a Dog

1. Purchase the Right Supplies

First, you should acquire a few supplies to keep your dog healthy and occupied in your home. Plan to purchase a water and food dish, collar, and leash, along with foods and treats, a crate, and toys. A pet bed, grooming supplies, and pet waste bags will also be useful to have on hand.

2. Prepare Your Home

spayBecause you won’t know how your dog will act in your home until you’ve lived with them for a while, it’s a good idea to pet-proof your living space immediately. Keep garbage cans tightly secured, lift all electrical cords off the ground, and secure shoes in a closet. You should also make sure low windows are closed, and any decorations, remotes, or devices your pup could get into are kept out of their reach.

3. Explore New Surroundings

One of the best ways to introduce a pet into a new home is to go on a guided tour. With your dog still on the leash, walk around your home, indicating any off-limit areas with a firm “no.” Continue the process outside, guiding your pup around the perimeter of your property so they know where it ends. You should also lead them to their bowl, crate, and any other spaces just for them.

4. Schedule a Vet Check

A vet check will provide a baseline to let you know whether your dog is at a healthy weight for its age and breed, and whether you need to plan for any upcoming vaccinations. The vet will also check for any underlying health issues that may need to be addressed and advise preventive products to protect against fleas, ticks, and heartworm disease.

5. Arrange Spay or Neuter Services

Finally, if your adopted dog hasn’t been spayed or neutered, arrange to have this procedure performed when they’re at least three months of age. Spay and neuter services help to control overpopulation, make dogs less likely to roam and show aggression, and minimize the risk for certain serious diseases and infections.
