If a loved one passes and requested an open-casket funeral service, you’ll need to make decisions about their clothing. There are several considerations to keep in mind if you’re not sure where to begin. Sticking with general guidelines will ensure they’re presentable and will meet any after-care regulations the funeral home has. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Choose Clothing for the Deceased

1. Stay Formal

Funerals are generally formal affairs, and if you aren’t sure what to dress the deceased in, you’ll usually be safe with a black suit and tie or black dress. You don’t want to use any clothes that will be distracting and draw attention away from the service. Also, consider what your loved one wore to church each week, if they attended. If they asked for a casual funeral, dress them in their favorite everyday outfit.

2. Keep Cremation in Mind

funeralIf your loved one has chosen cremation, leave the valuables and sentimental items at home, as they can’t be recovered following cremation. There are also environmental regulations, and some clothing may not burn easily. Avoid rubber-soled shoes and treated leather. Check with the funeral home before the viewing so the clothing won’t create any issues.

3. Abide by Religious Customs

Religious beliefs need to be respected, whether they pertain to colors, clothing, or accessories. The deceased may want to be buried in a full suit or dress with their rosary beads if they’re Catholic, for example. For Muslims, you’ll need to leave space to place a copy of the Quran beneath their head. You’ll also need to choose non-restrictive clothing so the deceased can be easily wrapped in a burial shroud. If you have questions, speak with a religious leader.
