If you and your partner are trying to conceive, it’s important to start taking extra good care of your body. While you know that you shouldn’t smoke or drink as you’re trying to get pregnant, you may unknowingly be doing other things that decrease your odds of having a baby. Here are several OB-GYN approved do’s and don’ts of getting pregnant.

Do:

Keep track of your ovulation.

One of the most effective ways to get pregnant is to have sexual intercourse at the right time in your cycle. If you’re fairly regular, you will ovulate about two weeks before your menstrual cycle. Therefore, your fertile window will be the seven days before you’re expected to ovulate. However, if you’re not so regular, you may need to use a home ovulation kit to determine when you’re ovulating.

Focus on your diet.

OB-GYNWhat you eat can play a big role in your ability to conceive. If you include plenty of iron, protein, and calcium-rich foods in your diet, you can help prepare your body for pregnancy. Limit your consumption of high-mercury fish and caffeine, as they can both decrease fertility.

Don’t:

Gain or lose too much weight.

When you’re trying to get pregnant, OB-GYN professionals recommend keeping your weight stable. If you gain too much weight, you can develop diabetes and other medical conditions that can throw off your hormones and make conception more difficult. If you’re underweight, your body will recognize that you don’t have enough resources to support a healthy pregnancy and stop ovulating.

Don’t get too stressed.

It’s not uncommon for women to get stressed out if they’re not getting pregnant as fast they want. However, OB-GYN professionals will attest that excessive stress can negatively affect fertility. Reduce your stress levels by talking to a good friend, deep breathing, or practicing yoga.
