Getting a first dog is exciting. You’ve entered into a long and rewarding friendship that will include many adventures. Can your new pal be safely and happily be left alone? The answer is yes, with appropriate dog training.

Training Your Dog to Be Left Alone

Set the Pup up for Success

Make sure the dog has a comfortable bed that is away from busy areas. Encourage him to spend time in his bed while you are at home. Initially you may have to provide a chew toy in the bed or food releasing toys. Gently remind the dog to come back to the bed area if he seems inclined to follow you around. If he follows you, ignore him and don’t make eye contact. Soon your pup will be bored and leave to investigate other things. The end goal is to show the dog that being in his bed is pleasurable, and that you being home doesn’t always equal playtime.

Leave the Dog Alone While at Home

dog-trainingIf the dog persists in sticking close to you, try using baby gates or movable pens to create an area where the dog can see you from a distance. Give her treats or a chew toy to have while she’s by herself, a dog training tactic that teaches her to be happy alone. Gradually move from using the gate to closing a door, so that she can’t see you—perhaps only a minute or two to start with. Work up to longer time periods as the dog becomes comfortable. Play music, the TV, or use a white noise machine so the dog can’t necessarily hear you but feels companionship.

Leaving the Dog Alone

When the time comes to leave your dog alone, start by giving him a good walk and letting him eliminate.  Dogs need choices throughout the day, so use the baby gate or movable pen to keep him in a dog-safe area with the option of going into his crate. Practice by leaving for just an hour or two first before leaving for several hours. Never leave a dog, especially a puppy, alone for an extended time without the option of going to the bathroom. If you can’t be there, pay a pet sitter to come and let them out. You may also “practice” by leaving them for a day in a doggie daycare, which may be less traumatic than being home alone. If separation anxiety persists, talk to your vet or a behavioral specialist for help.
