A sturdy fence provides privacy and keeps strangers out of your property. When it starts showing signs of deterioration or sustains a bit of damage, you might be torn between scheduling fence repairs or a full replacement. The decision often depends on the extent of the damage, so here’s how to know which is right for you.

Why Go for Fence Repair

Fortunately, not all damage merits replacement. Issues like wood rot, loose boards, missing sections, small gaps, and crooked posts can still be fixed with simple fence repairs.

For wood fencing, planks that are starting to show signs of decay, such as holes or cracks, can be replaced. Additional pressure treated posts can be added to fences that may have a broken post or two.

What to Consider When Replacing

More often than not, extensive damage can only be resolved with a full replacement. For wooden fence the more panels you change, the more expensive repair costs will be. As a rule of thumb, opt to replace the entire structure if more than a quarter of the boards show signs of decay, pests, or damage from natural disasters.

If several of the posts appear crooked or have snapped, it’s better to overhaul the entire system. Posts play a significant role in a fence’s structural integrity because they provide support to the panels and rails. When they fail, the entire structure is compromised. For issues that only involve positioning and resetting crooked posts, there may be no need for a complete replacement. Each situation is evaluated independently.

Another factor to consider when replacing a fence is its age. Some fences, especially those made with treated lumber, last for decades, while others last a much shorter time, depending how they were constructed and type of materials used. If yours is past its prime, go with a full replacement.
